Sol Naciente, El Salvador

Study the life of Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador during El Salvador's brutal civil war. Romero was also known as the "bishop of the poor" for his work defending the Salvadoran people.

Follow these steps to get started

Decide on the type and specific location of the program.

Select length of program and your preferred time of year.

Select the time of year: winter, spring, summer or fall
Select the length: 1 week, 2 weeks, a month, a full semester

Complete all application materials.

Obtain and review the application required for the program of interest.ÌýStudents must have a minimum Grade Point Average of 2.7 to participate in academic Study Abroad programs.

 

After the above application materials are fully completed, bring a copy of the form, along with a printout of the off-campus course descriptions, to your advisor for his or her approval. You will then need the approval of the Division Director.Ìý ÌýAfter obtaining all the necessary signatures, bring the form and course descriptions to Office of the Academic Dean, located in the Casey Hall, to discuss the next steps.

Who is eligible?

While each travel program has specific requirements, all students must be in good academic standing. Participation in some programs is highly competitive.Ìý Each year only two students are chosen to participate in the Footsteps of St. Dominic. Four students are chosen to participate in the El Salvador program.

What will it cost?

  • Each program will differ, but costs are generally discussed in detail on the specific program application or website.
  • Scholarships covering program costs,Ìýexcluding airfare, have been available to students participating in theÌýFootsteps of St. DominicÌýprogram and theÌýEl SalvadorÌýprogram.
  • Your budget should include all additional costs such as those associated with obtaining a passport, visas, airfare, ground travel, etc.
  • Financial aid for the fall and spring semesters can generally be applied to the Global Studies programs atÌýSt. John’s University.

    • The Hispanic Association of Colleges and Universities (HACU) offers support for study abroad.Ìý TheÌýÌýis open to students who are currently attending a HACU-member HSI. Spring calendar year deadline is Nov. 1.
    • You may also apply for outside funding through theÌýÌýdesigned to broaden the population of American undergraduate students who might otherwise not participate in study abroad programs due to financial constraints.
    • NAFSA: Association of International Educators lists a number ofÌýÌýon their website.
    • The National Council of Alpha Lambda Delta, the National Honor Society for First-Year Success, offers 20ÌýÌýannually.Ìý There are ten $1,000 scholarships and ten $2,000 scholarships. Applications for this undergraduate study abroad scholarship are available to chapters via the national website.


    What is a reasonable study abroad timeline?

    It is never too early to begin thinking about an overseas trip. You should begin the process at least one year in advance of your planned departure date.


    What should I be particularly mindful of as I plan to study abroad?

    • Pay special attention to all deadlines, especially application deadlines. Remember that it will also take some time to apply for and receive your passport and any necessary visas.
    • If you are seeking college credit be sure to discuss your plans with your adviser and obtain his or her approval before you submit your application.
    • Prepare a personal budget. Encountering unanticipated expenses while overseas can present significant challenges.
