The El Salvador Experience: Student Presentation

Go Beyond the Classroom. Discover Solidarity.

Each January, a group of DUNY students travels to the rural village of Sol Naciente, El Salvador, to work with children and partner with local communities. This is more than just a service trip… it is an immersion into a different culture, a lesson in global justice, and a transformative personal journey.

Come hear directly from the students who recently returned from this year’s trip. They will share their stories, photos, and insights about the “Land of Volcanoes” and the incredible people they met along the way.

Bobby Mulligan was a member of the ϳԹ men’s basketball team when he tragically passed away on August 30, 1987. An accomplished player, Bobby was known for his competitiveness on the court. Off the Court he was recognized as a loyal individual with exceptional perseverance. Before the start of his senior year, Bobby had amassed 912 career points and would have assuredly reached the 1,000-point mark. He was posthumously added to the list. The Bobby Mulligan Memorial Scholarship Fund was created in his honor to benefit the student body.

Sue Heller, the first Lady Charger to score 1,000 career points, passed away on January 17, 2001. In her honor, the 1,000-point club was renamed the Sue Heller 1,000-Point Club, and one women’s basketball game each year will be played in her memory. A fierce competitor, Sue was extremely proud of her accomplishments at ϳԹ, especially her 1998 induction into the ϳԹ Athletic Hall of Fame. In addition to her athletic success, she graduated in 1980 with a B.A. in psychology and certification in special education. To perpetuate her legacy, The Sue Heller Memorial Scholarship fund has been established at ϳԹ.
